NOW HEAR THIS
- SKIPPER'S NOTES
This is a tough
one…because it's the last one for me. I have volunteered to write each
month for the new Skipper in some manner. We'll see what happens. I
want to take this opportunity to hank every member of the Rocky Mountain
Ship-wrights for the help, cooperation, advice, and attention paid in
2002 during my year as your Skipper. I particularly want to thank those
who so ably were there throughout the year as officers of the club (Jon
Sorensen as 1st Mate, Bob Conover as Purser, who has done a marvelous
job even while fighting some personal problems, and Bob Slattery who
kept the minutes of each meeting). These are truly great guys. Others
who have contributed immensely to our success and growth are Bob Rushfroth
who took over the mammoth task of making sure the Scuttlebutt was revived,
Wayne Cassell who is responsible for our entry into having a very fine
and to-be-proud-of website. And sincere thanks to all those who took
time planning and presenting our very popular monthly programs. I was
proud and humbled at being the club Skipper.

Lets
briefly look at what WE accomplished. The revival of the Scuttlebutt,
the website, the formation of the Commodores (past Skippers), the annual
show of ships and the addition of quite a few new members were accomplished.
You new members are just as important and we invite all to become active
members. We ask that as many members as possible be at our upcoming
December 21st meeting. New officers for the upcoming year will be presented
for vote, as finalized at our last session (Ed Quam as Skipper, Jon
Sorensen as 1st Mate, Bob Conover as Purser, and John McGann as Scribe).
From what I've already heard, the programs for the coming year are bigger
and better with several programs back by popular demand. For the January
program we need your help. We need someone to let us use a digital recorder
and an overhead projector. It will be presented to the club that we
purchase our own since the treasury is bulging. Speaking of our cash-on-hand,
2003 dues are due once again ($12/year as usual).
We have been sent an SOS from a shipbuilders club in Florida that seems
to be having survival problems. (This is not the club that Laddie Dick
started. His club is doing great and now is up to 29 members.) Ideas
and suggestions have been sent to assist and more will be forthcoming.
One of our former members, Dennis Stimpson, who now lives there, is
seeking our help on ways and means to keep their club active and prospering.
And finally, for those who have inquired, I'm coming along with my battle
with cancer. The next step will be surgery in the first part of 2003,
after which I will be walking on my hands for a week or two. Thanks
for asking.
Hope to see you on the 21st of December.
Your Skipper, Jim Smith
